A two vehicle accident occurred Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:43 pm at the intersection of Pancake Boulevard and Jewel Street in Liberal.

A 2017 Chevy Traverse being driven by 47 year old Adalberto Abreu-Leon of Liberal, was heading east on U.S. 54, when a 2011 Dodge Caliber being driven by Jesus Tamayo, 16, of Liberal, attempted to make a left-hand turn from Jewell Avenue onto U.S. 54. The driver of the Traverse made an avoidance maneuver but was struck in the passenger side by the Dodge Caliber, which came to rest in a parking lot. The Traverse and the Caliber came to rest in the vegetation at the Liberal Tourism Center parking lot.

Tamayo and Abreu-Leon were not injured and neither was a passenger in Tamayo’s vehicle, Allison Palomares- Rivera, 16 of Liberal. A passenger in the Traverse, Barbarita Ortega-Rodriguez, 60, of Liberal, was taken to Southwest Medical Center with suspected minor injuries.

All four occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
