After a 4-2 loss in game one, the Seward County Saints responded with 19-7 run rule win over the Colby Trojans Thursday afternoon and evening at Brent Gould Field in Liberal.
Colby struck for three in the first. Blaine Chancy lofted a solo home run to left center in the second to make it 3-1. Ryan Todd doubled to left to lead off the third. Isai Santaella doubled. Juan Alvarez hit a sac fly to deep right to make it 3-2. Colby added an insurance run in the seventh to lead 4-2. Braden Whipple was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game with 4 and 1/3 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, one walk, and one run. Michael Lujan went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing one earned run with three strikeouts, four walks, and a HBP. Colby out-hit Seward 5-4. All four of Seward’s hits were extra basehits. Seward committed two errors in the loss.
In game two, the Saints scored two in the first. Juan Alvarez singled. Hayden Ramage whistled a double down the third baseline. Grant Cox singled home a run. A second run scored on an error. The Saints scored three runs on four hits in the second. Jacob Urias singled. Mason Gilbert walked. Diego Munoz singled. Isai Santaella singled home two. Juan Alvarez singled home a run. Jhett Huffman homered off the scoreboard to lead off the third. Jacob Urias doubled. Isai Santaella singled him home for a 7-0 lead in the third. Colby scored three in the fourth to make it 7-3. Seward responded with a six run fourth for the 13-3 lead. After two walks and an error, Grant Cox hit a sac fly. Jhett Huffman singled. Jacob Urias singled home a run. Mason Gilbert hit a three run home run to center. Colby scored four in the seventh to make it 13-7. Seward walked it off with a run rule in the bottom of the seventh. Juan Alvarez hit a home run off the scoreboard to lead off the seventh. A run scored on an error. Mason Gilbert hit a grand slam to left center to end the game at 19-7. Mason Gilbert was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game going 2-3 with seven RBI’s and two home runs. Juan Avarez and Jacob Urias had three hits a piece. Urias scored four runs and Alvarez scored three runs. Hayden Ramage, Grant Cox, Jhett Huffman, and Isai Santaella added two hits a piece. Cox drove home three runs. Brooks Kappelmann got the win pitching five innings with four strikeouts and three walks allowing three runs.
Colby is 11-22 overall and 4-14 in the Jayhawk West. Seward is 18-22 overall and 10-4 in the Jayhawk West. The same two teams play Saturday at 1pm with Saints Dugout Show at 12:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
