Seward County Athletics Announces 2018 Hall of Fame Class

Joe Denoyer - January 31, 2018 4:18 pm

Seward County Director of Athletics Roy Allen has announced that Seward County will welcome Kelby Tomlinson and Tracy Wynn to its Athletics Hall of Fame.  Celebrating the 7th induction ceremony, this year’s class of 2018 brings the current roster of Hall of Fame inductees to 18 members and one team. Volleyball player Joy Okpa also received enough votes to be inducted, but will wait to join the 2019 class so she can attend the ceremony.

“The announcement of our Hall of Fame Class is always a special event each year,” said Allen. “This year, like years past, we are going to have an opportunity to really celebrate two Seward County greats.  Not only are we going to be inducting two great athletes, we are inducting two great people who continue to have strong connections and a passion for Seward County to this day. “

Kelby Tomlinson became the first Saint in Seward County baseball history to reach Major League Baseball when he got the call from the San Francisco Giants in 2015.  Tomlinson hit .303 as a rookie in 2015, starting more than 40 games in the second half of the season.

He burst onto the scene for the Saints in 2010 as a sophomore, earning 1st Team All-Jayhawk West and 1st Team All-Region VI honors before being named an NJCAA All-American.  During his sophomore campaign, Tomlinson scored a school record 90 runs and stole 28 bases which is 4th most in a season in school history.

Allen on Tomlinson: “Kelby’s story is one that we will continue to tell over and over and over; a kid that was lightly recruited, came in here and played a reserve role for us as a freshman and then worked so hard over the next year that we couldn’t keep him out of the lineup, turning himself into an All-American, signing at Texas Tech, and becoming a 12th round pick in the draft before reaching the Major Leagues in 2015.”

A member of the Lady Saints National Championship squad in 2002, Wynn has her name all over the Seward record books as the all-time leader in rebounding with 641 and free throws made with 376, while checking in at 5th in scoring with 1,154 career points and 7th in field goals made with 389.

During an All-American sophomore season, Wynn scored 631 points and grabbed 337 rebounds while making 40 more free throws than any other Seward player in history has with 225.  The Lady Saints went 38-0 that season to capture the only National Championship in school history, giving Wynn and the Seward sophomores a career record of 71-1.

Wynn starred as a freshman as well, earning 1st Team All-KJCCC and Region VI honors in both of her seasons with the Lady Saints while also being named to the Region VI All-Tournament Team in both seasons before moving on and playing at TCU to wrap up her career.

Allen on Wynn: “Tracy’s story is just as good, coming here and helping lead us to a 71-1 record over two seasons as an All-American and capturing our first and only National Championship in school history before moving on and having a successful career at TCU.  Then, just a few years later, she sent her little brother our way and all he has done is rack up 337 wins as our Head Women’s Basketball Coach.”

The pair will take their place in Seward County history on April 20th during the Hall of Fame Banquet in the Greenhouse.

“Both Kelby and Tracy are very special to all of us here at Seward County and embody everything that we try to teach to our Saints and Lady Saints, and we can’t wait to celebrate them in April,” Allen added.
