Seward 2nd at Region 6 Tennis

WICHITA, Kan. – Seward County Community College placed second at the Region VI men’s tennis tournament at Maize South High School this past weekend. The Saints finished the tournament with 8 points as Cowley finished with 16 points to win the Region VI title, Barton received 5.5 points, and Pratt finished with 0. The two-day event started on Saturday, April 30th, and concluded on Sunday, May 1st in Wichita, Kansas. They will now compete at the NJCAA National Tournament starting on May 16th at Tyler Junior college in Tyler, Texas.

On the first day of the competition, the Saints won No. 1 doubles with Luciano Fisicaro and Karlo Krolodefeating Pratt’s Despontin and Arrieta 6-2, 6-7 (7-4). The Saints Luke Quaynor and Kyllian Savary fell to Kaoma and Kalaba from Barton 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) in the No. 2 doubles draw. They moved on to the No. 2 doubles consolation match.  In No. 3 doubles the Saints Juan “Mauri” Gonzalez and Franco Vecchia won 6-2, 6-1 over Bajracharya and Tsiang from Barton. The Saints moved on to the championship match in the No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles draw.

To end the day the Saints competed in the singles draws. In No. 1 singles Fisicaro defeated Campos from Barton 6-2 6-0. Quaynor moved on after defeating Arrieta from Pratt 6-1, 6-0. Savary defeated Goncalves from Pratt 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round of the No. 3 singles draw. Gonzalez fell 7-6 (2) 6-1 to Barton’s Kalaba in the No. 4 singles and fell to the consolation match. Krolo defeated Makarov from Pratt 6-1 6-0 to advance to the championship of the No. 5 singles draw. Martins Abamu defeated Tsiang from Barton 7-5 and 6-2 to move on to the championship match.

On championship Sunday the Saints had seven championship matches all against the Cowley Tigers and two consolation matches to end the tournament. The doubles once again started the day with Fisicaro and Krolo defeating Bruno and Hirano from Cowley 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Quaynor and Savary defeated Goncalves and Makarov from Pratt 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles consolation match. Gonzalez and Vecchia fell 7-0, 7-6 (11-9) to Cowley’sGarmenida and Taco in the No. 3 doubles championship match.

Fisicaro fell to Taco from Cowley 6-0, 6-3 in the singles draw championship. In the No. 2 singles championship, Luke Quaynor fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to Skierkier from Cowley. Savary defeated Carvajal from Cowley 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles championship to win the draw. In the consolation of the No. 4 singles draw Gonzalez defeated Pratt’s Dashkov 6-3, 6-1. Krolo competed against Cowleys Collins in the No. 5 championship and fell 6-4, 2-6, 1-6. In the final match of the weekend, Abamu fell to Garmendia from Cowley 6-2, 5-7, and 6-3 in the championship of the No. 6 singles draw.

The Saints finished second and will head to the National Tournament in Tyler, Texas on May 16th, 2022.
