Saints Use Defense to Post 20th Win of the Season

Brock Kappelmann - February 10, 2019 8:28 am

Elijah Punnett and Montrevion Flowers keyed a decisive 16-6 run in the first half and staunch defense led the No. 17 Seward County Community College men’s basketball team to its 20th win of the season with a 76-53 triumph over the Pratt Beavers on Homecoming at the Greenhouse.

The Saints improved to 20-5 overall and 13-3 in the Jayhawk West. It was the first time Seward posted 20 wins since the 2013-14 season when it finished the season at 23-10. Seward leads the conference, one game ahead of Barton County.

SCCC played suffocating defense, holding Pratt to just 32 percent from the field on 17-of-53 shooting while forcing 24 turnovers. The Saints shot a 43 percent from the field on 28-of-64 shooting and hitting 8-of-22 from three-point land.

With score tied at 18 with 4:40 left in the first, Punnett had six points, Flowers added five, Reggie Miller chipped in with four and Isiah Smallhit a free throw to close the half and give Seward a 34-24 lead. The Beavers closed to within four in the second half, but the Saints put the game on ice with a 22-6 run.

Marco Morency led the Saints with 17 points while Hegel Augustine had 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds and Devin Bethely chipped in with 12 points and seven assists.

Blake Furcron had 12 points and Drew Maschoff netted 10 points for the Beavers, who dropped to 4-12 in conference play and 11-14 overall.

The Saints look to extend their winning streak to four games when they travel to Dodge City on Monday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.
