Saints Take Two at Colby for Sweep

The Seward County Saints swept the Colby Trojans Sunday afternoon at Young Field in Colby.  The Saints fended off two Colby rallies for wins by scores of 8-6 and 12-11.  Seward sweeps the four game series and wins the Colby series for the third time in four years.

In game one, the Saints scored three in the first.  Two scored on an error and Cameron Cartwright singled home a run for three unearned runs in the inning.  The Trojans scored one in the second.  The Saints scored one in the fourth.  Trenton Rowan singled and scored on Jarron Wilcox’s single for the 4-1 lead.  The Trojans scored one in the fifth.  Todd Baffa ripped a home run to left in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.  The Saints struggled on defense in the bottom of the sixth allowing three unearned runs on three hits and two errors.   That tied the game at 5-5 after six.  The Saints scored three in the seventh to take the lead back.  Cameron Cartwright and Ranse Radtke singled to lead off the seventh.  Jaxson Gregg singled home a run.  Elijah Bear hit a sac fly.  Trenton Rowan hit a sac fly for the 8-5 lead.  Colby scored a run in the seventh.  Elias Herrera pitched 6 and 1/3 innings for the win.  TJ Newman worked 2/3 for his second save.  Cameron Cartwright ws 2-4 with an RBI.  Seward out-hit Colby 10-7.

In game two, Elijah Bear doubled home a run in the first.  Colby scored two in the first and one in the second for the 3-1 lead.  The Saints plated three in the third for the 4-3 lead.  Connor Cox homered to right to lead off the inning.  Trenton Rowan singled home two.  The Saints scored in the fourth to lead 5-3.  Jordan Crowder bounced a double down the third base line.  Ranse Radtke hit a sac fly.  Colby scored five runs on four hits in the fourth.  Four runs were unearned after an SCCC error.  That gave the Trojans an 8-5 lead.  The Saints plated two in the fifth to make it 8-7.  Elijah Bear doubled and Mason Hagel Pitt doubled him home.  Trenton Rowan singled and Todd Baffa lofted a sac fly to center.  SCCC tied the game in the sixth when Jaxson Gregg delivered a clutch two out RBI single.  The “Guys in Green” scored four in the eighth to lead 12-8.  Cameron Cartwright homered to right center for his sixth home run of the series and his Jayhawk West leading 14th of the season.  Ranse Radtke walked and Jaxson Gregg singled.  Elijah Bear reached on an error and a run scored.  Mason Hagel Pitt walked.  Todd Baffa singled home a run and Jordan Crowder walked with the bases loaded.  Colby rallied scoring two in the eighth.  But it could have been more.  Connor Cox field a fly ball in right center with the bases loaded and threw out the runner trying to score from home for the inning ending double play to maintain the 12-10 lead.  Colby scored one in the ninth.  The Saints bullpen picked up the slack.  Bo Jacob Garza went 1 and 2/3 scoreless.  Ryuga Matsumara went 2 and 1/3 allowing two runs.  Trent Gerber worked a scoreless ninth for the save.  Elijah Bear and Trenton Rowan had three hits a piece.  Connor Cox was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and the key defensive play.  Cox was Epic Touch Player of the Game.  Colby out-hit Seward 15-14.

Colby is 10-29 overall and 4-16 in the KJCCC West. Seward is 25-21 overall and 15-9 in the Jayhawk West and moves into fourth place.  The Saints play at Clarendon on Tuesday.
