Saints Lean on Defense for Win Over Colby

The Seward County Saints win their home conference opener one year after going 2-22 in the Jayhawk.   The Saints leaned on their defense in a 73-56 win over the visiting Colby Trojans Saturday afternoon and evening in the Green House.  Seward forced 25 Trojan turnovers and held Colby to 33 percent shooting.

Both teams got off to slow offensive starts.  Both teams struggled to shoot and were hampered by turnovers.  Colby led 8-0 before SCCC took a 10-8 lead.  Colby led 14-10 before 12-2 run gave the Saints a 22-16 lead.  It was 24-19 Seward at the half.  SCCC out scored Colby 49-37 in the second half.  The Saints led 28-22 at the 17:13 mark and led 38-26 with 11:12 to play.  Seward dominated the rest of the game clamping down on Colby’s offense while making their free throws on the other end.  The Saints led by as many as 19 on the way to the win.

Seward shot 50 percent from the field but went 5-19 from three point range.  Seward sank 28-35 at the foul line for 80 percent.  Colby shot 33 percent while sinking 10-26 from 3 and 11-22 for 73 percent at the foul line.  Seward out-rebounded Colby 33-24.  Seward won despite 24 turnovers.  Seward led points in the paint 28-8.  Seward led bench points 49-25.

Antonio Williams Jr. was epic Touch Player of the Game with 18 points.  Lucas N’Gombo added 13 points and eight rebounds.  RJ McKinnie scored 14 points and dished six assists.

Colby falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk.  Seward is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk.   The Saint had lost three straight against the Trojans.  Seward hosts #3 Coffeyville Tuesday night at 8pm on 1270 and 92.3.   Pepsi is the buyout sponsor and tickets will be available at the college and the Saints Bookstore.
