For the first time since 2019, the Seward Count Saints beat the Hutchinson Blue Dragons in men’s basketball. Seward took down Hutch 53-48 Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. It was just Seward’s seventh ever win over the Dragons in Hutchinson. They also won in the Sports Arena in 2019, 2014, 2005, 2001, 1998, and 1971.
Seward took an early 8-5 lead. The Saints led 26-23 at halftime. The Saints grabbed a 34-31 lead at the 17:30 mark. SCCC took a 43-37 lead with nine minutes to go and led 49-39 with 5:32 to play. The Blue Dragons trimmed the lead to 49-48 with 55 seconds left. Lucas N’Gombo hit two clutch free throws to make it 51-48 with 25 seconds left.
Seward shot 34 percent from the field but made 11-24 from three point range while sinking 6-8 from the foul line. Hutch shot 47 percent from the field but went 3-16 from three and 3-6 from the foul line. Seward out-rebounded the Dragons 32-25.
RJ McKinnie was Epic Touch Player of the Game with 14 points and five rebounds. Lucas N’Gombo had nine points and seven rebounds.
The Saints snap an 11 game losing streak against the Dragons. Hutchinson is 6-4 and 1-3 in the Jayhawk. Seward is 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the Jayhawk. Wednesday the Saints travel to Pratt to play the Beavers at 7:30 on 1270 and 92.3.
