The Seward County Saints and Dodge City Conquistadors split a pair Thursday afternoon at Dodge City’s Cavlier Field. The Saints built a 6-1 lead in game one but lost on a walk off home run in game one 9-8. Seward controlled game two and won 13-2. The games were played on a sunny and windy day with temperatures in the 80’s. The wind was blowing out 25-35 miles per hour.
The Conqs rallied from 6-1 down to win the first game 9-8. The Conquistadors hit four home runs and the Saints hit one. DCCC out-hit SCCC 11-9. The Saints scored three in the first as Grant Cox ripped a three RBI double to right center. Diego Munoz hit a towering home run to left in the second for a 4-1 lead. Hayden Ramage and Grant Cox provided RBI singles in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. Dodge City scored three in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4. Isai Santaella walked with the bases loaded in the fifth for the 7-4 lead. The Conqs plated three runs on four hits in the fifth to tie the game 7-7. DCCC took an 8-7 lead with a lead off homer in the bottom of the sixth. Khale Leblanc scored the tying run on a passed ball in the seventh. He took two bases from first to third as Dodge City was arguing a call. A Dodge City lead off home run in the bottom of the seventh ended the game. Grant Cox was 3-4 with four RBI’s and was named Black Hills Energy Player of the Game.
Seward dominated game two 13-2. SCCC hit five home runs in the win and out-hit the Conqs 17-9. Mason Gilbert hit a two run home run to right in the second. Dodge City scored two runs on two hits and an error in the second. The Saints scored three in the third. Juan Alvarez blasted a two run home run to right. David Brabb tripled to center and Jacob Urias singled him home for the 5-2 lead. Grant Cox grounded out to score a run in the fifth for the 6-2 advantage. The Saints blew the game wide open in the eighth. Isai Santaella blistered a home run over the scoreboard in left center. Grant Cox hit a tower two run home run to left center. David Brabb added a solo blast for the third home run of the inning. Grant Cox added a three run homer in the ninth. David Brabb was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game going 4-6 with a home run and a triple. Grant Cox was 2-6 with two home runs and five RBI’s. Mason Gilbert was 2-4 with a home run. Juan Alvarez was 2-4 with a dinger. Diego Munoz and Jhett Huffman had two hits a piece. J. Brooks Kappelmann pitched 6 and 1/3 strong innings allowing one earned run with five strikeouts and two walks. Trajan Chavez pitched 2 and 2/3 scoreless with four strikeouts and no walks.
Dodge City is 15-24 overall and 4-14 in the Jayhawk West. Seward is 20-24 overall and 12-6 in the Jayhawk West. The Saints host Dodge City Friday at noon at Brent Gould Field. The games were moved up a day due to the weather forecast for rain Friday night and Saturday.
