Saints Claw Past Cowley in Overtime

The Seward County Saints used overtime to defeat the Cowley Tigers 91-83 Wednesday night at Scott Auditorium in Ark City.  Seward is in a two way tie for first in the Jayhawk with Dodge City.  The Saints snap a five game losing streak against the Tigers.

Cowley built early leads of 6-0 and 13-5.  The Tigers led 24-12.  The Saints crept back into the game to make it 27-22.  The Tigers led 45-35 at halftime.  The Saints sliced into the Tiger lead making it 47-41 two minutes into the second half.  The Saints cut the lead to 47-43 with 15:54  to play.  The Saints cut the lead to 47-45.  Cowley went on an 11-0 run to lead 56-45.  The Saints used a 14-3 run to tie the game at 59-59 after a step back three pointer by Antonio Williams Jr.  RJ Mckinnie’s three pointer gave the Saints a 70-67 lead with 4:45 remaining.  SCCC led 72-68 with 3:10 to play and led 74-70 with 2:28 remaining.  But the Saints did not score again in regulation as the game went to overtime 74-74.  Awit Mamer gave Seward an 84-79 lead in overtime with 1:37 remaining.

The Saints shot 40 percent making 5-18 from three point range and were 36-47 from the foul line.  Cowley shot 45 percent making 6-29 from three and 19-28 from the free throw line.

RJ McKinnie was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game scoring 24 points.  Antonio Williams Jr. added 18.  Lucas N’Gombo had 16 points and nine rebounds.  Awit Mamer added 11 points and six rebounds.

Cowley is  11-6 overall and 6-5 in the Jayhawk.   Seward is 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the Jayhawk.  Seward is tied for first with Dodge City and plays at Dodge City Saturday at 3pm on 1270 and 92.3.
