Redskins Top Topeka in Overtime

The Liberal soccer team built a 2-0 lead before the Topeka Trojans rallied to send the game to overtime.  But a Suain Moncayo penalty kick in overtime helped the Redskins advance in the 6A playoffs with a 3-2 win over Topeka at Redskin Field.

Liberal scored while the sun was still out.  Suain Moncayo found the back of the net at the 36:21 mark.  Johnny Young gave LHS a 2-0 lead with a goal at the 16:39 mark.  Topeka scored into the north net on a penalty kick.  It was 2-1 Liberal at halftime.  Topeka used a free kick after a hand ball to tie the score at 2-2 with 10:30 to go.  The game went into overtime.  After a hand ball in the box, Suain Moncayo banged home the game winning penalty kick into the north net 2:30 into overtime.

Liberal is 10-4-3 and Topeka finishes 7-10.  It’s Liberal first playoff win since 2020.  The Redskins play at Derby Thursday night at 6pm.  Derby blanked Maize 1-0 Tuesday night.
