Redskins Running for More in 2013

KSCB News - September 5, 2013 2:17 pm

The Liberal boys cross country team finished fourth at state in 2011 and fifth in 2012. That’s a pretty good start in the first two years for head coach Tyson McGuire. But this year, with 58 out for the sport, the goals are even more lofty. He has a goal of seeing the boys finish in the top three in the state and qualifying the girls to state something they accomplished just two years ago.

One of the top runners in the state Angel Viveros isn’t eligible to compete this fall due to transfer rules, but there is stille plenty of returning talent. As Liberal opens the season Thursday at Great Bend, the varsity lineup consists of Sr. Erving Altamirano, Sr. Sammy Obando, Jr. Luis Medina, Jr. Obed Quintana, Jr. Ivan Aleman, and Fr. Edgar Moreno. There are 33 boys out for cross country after the Redskins won their regional last year.

The girls numbers are up with 25 out for cross country. McGuire points to Sr. Madison Butler, Jr. Vanny Diaz, Jr. Allyson Nondorf, Jr. Kelli Ramirez, So. Kacie Mathews, Fr. Camryn Slatten, Fr. Sammantha Terrazes, and Fr. Yanelly Jurado.

But you will likely see and hear about many other names in during meets this season as McGuire says varsity spots are very competitive.

McGuire was guest durin the Thursday Sportsguys.
