Redskins Earn Respect in Goddard

Liberal tennis is recognized with an invitation to its biggest tournament ever. On Saturday, April 9, 2011, the Liberal Redskin Boys’ Tennis team competed against the best tennis programs in the State at the John Markham Spring Classic in Goddard. Sixteen teams competed for top honors with the top four teams in 5-A tennis and three of the top 6-A teams represented. Top competing teams included Bishop Carroll, Blue Valley West, Campus, Conway Springs, Goddard Blue, Goddard White, Hesston, Hutchinson, Lawrence Free State, Maize, Salina Central, St. Thomas Aquinas, Topeka West, Wichita Collegiate, and Wichita Independent. With tennis courts at every high school and youth/middle schools programs for each team, the odds were stacked against Liberal winning a single match, yet Liberal was able to bring home ten victories earning the respect from the state.

Individual results:

#1 Singles—Josh Hamilton went 2-3 on the day. He lost to Blue Valley West’s Matt Rodgers 1-8, lost to Bishop Carroll’s Logan Blevins 6-8, Defeated Topeka Wests’s Marcus Pyles 8-6, lost to Conway Spring’s Seth Rasmussen6-8, then defeated Trevor Cary from Campus 8-0.

#2 Singles—Ozzie Villarreal went 2-3 on the day. He lost to Julian Scholz from Hutchinson 0-8, lost to Goddard’s Nathan Jamison 3-8, defeated Topeka West’s Blake Barrow 8-7 (4), defeated Trevor Carey from Campus 8-7 (4), then lost to Conway Spring’s Seth Rasmussen 2-8.

#1 Doubles—Vince Nguyen/Duc Nguyen went 3-2 on the day. They defeated Goddard’s Gerken/Pierret 8-3, lost to Bishop Carrol’s Lollar/Torres 2-8, lost to Maize’s McChristian/Perry 7-8 (7), then defeated Maize’s Jenkins/McCanlies 8-6, and defeated St. Thomas AAquinas’ Logan/Robinson 8-7 (3).

#2 Doubles—Larcyn Carter/Tony Rodriquez went 3-2 on the day. They lost to Salina Central’s Johson/Weiner 2-8, lost to Heston’s Redding/Dahlsten 4-8, defeated Wichita Collegiate’s Frank/Brown 8-4, defeated Goddard’s Mog/Varth 8-5, and defeated Salina Central’s Hamton/Brown 8-2.
