Redskins Cap Off Home Season with Win Over Buffaloes

The Liberal Redskins score five unanswered runs to knock off visiting Garden City 5-2 Friday afternoon at the National Beef Sports Complex.  The Redskins assured themselves of their first winning season since 2019 and have their most wins since 2018 (16).

On the day before graduation, Liberal’s six seniors saw the Buffaloes jump out on the Redskins with one in the first and one in the fourth.  The Redskins used four different pitchers to get multiple pitchers some work ahead of next week’s 6A regional.  The Skins did all of their scoring in the fourth and fifth.  Two seniors stalwarts were right in the middle of that run, Brooks Kappelmann and Zayden Martinez.  Kappelmann lined a single to left to begin the fourth with the Redskins trailing 2-0.  Zayden Martinez ripped an RBI triple over the right fielder’s head.  Blayden Betts drove home Martinez with an infield single to tie the score.  In the fifth, Xavier Porras singled to lead off the inning.  Aiden Miramontes singled with one out.  Brooks Kappelmann stepped up with two on and two outs and ripped a two RBI triple over the center fielder’s head for a 4-2 lead.  Zayden Martinez followed that up with an RBI triple to right center.

The Redskins out-hit the Buffaloes 10-7.  Zayden Martinez worked two innings with five strikeouts.  Skyler Hubbard went two innings with two strikeouts and no walks.  Marco Alonso went a scoreless inning.  Erek Lira worked two shutout innings to seal it.  Zayden Martinez was Epic Touch Player of the game going 2-3 with two triples and two RBI’s.  Brooks Kappelmann was 2-3 with two RBI’s and two runs.

Garden City is 7-11 overall and 0-8 in the WAC.  Liberal is 13-10 and 3-5 in the WAC.  It’s Liberal’s first sweep over Garden City since 2018.  Liberal plays in their 6A regional next week on 1270 and 92.3.
