Yvonne Vera (Vonnie) Schwindt, age 91, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. She was born May 22, 1931, in rural Scott County, Kansas, the daughter of Joe and Estella (Cummins) Knobbe.

Yvonne graduated in 1949 from Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita. In 1950, she married Gene Schwindt. Yvonne did various jobs while working at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and also the hospital in Leoti. She and Gene moved to Liberal where they raised their family and she worked at the telephone company. Yvonne also worked in Liberal as the Supervisor of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1980, she married Harold Tompkins and they settled in Ulysses. She worked at the liquor store for many years before purchasing it. She was a very successful business woman. Yvonne is a devout Catholic and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Yvonne is survived by her children, Nick Schwindt and wife Mona of Liberal, Kansas, Kim Schwindt and wife Iris of Ulysses, Candace Moten of Lawrence, Darcy Broadfoot and husband Brent of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Kari Harrison and husband Mike of Green Valley, Arizona; brother, Larry Knobbe and wife Connie of Marienthal; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Yvonne is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Estella Knobbe; sisters, Lucille Dean and JoAnn Barrows; brothers, Jesse and Vern Knobbe; grandson, Nigel Broadfoot; and son-in-law, Willis Moten.

Funeral service will be Monday, January 16, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Graveside will be Monday, January 16, 2023, at 1:00 PM at St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal, Kansas, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, January 15, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to American Diabetes Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
