Velma Coen:UPDATE

Velma Pearl Coen, passed away at the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart, Kansas on February 21, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was 97 years old.

Velma was born December 9, 1915 in Stafford County, Kansas to Alford and Pearl (Keesling) German.

She married the love of her life, M.R. Coen on May 15, 1938 in Richfield, Kansas. On January 4, 1939 they welcomed a son, Larry R. Coen. Velma enjoyed helping M.R. on the farm; they both had a love for traveling. Velma was a great story teller and many enjoyed the poems she wrote. A card was never received from Velma without a poem written inside. Her grandchildren remember many great times with Grandma, drinking orange tea, eating ice cream, playing the organ, her coconut cream pie, and her peanut butter cookies. Velma also loved to draw and would doodle on anything. Velma never knew a stranger and could visit with anyone. She also had a great love for animals, especially horses.

She is survived by her son, Larry Coen and wife Mary of Elkhart, Kansas; four grandchildren, Troy Coen and wife Cassie, Brenda Bloyd and husband Troy, Loren Coen and wife Rhonda, Jaclyn Lee and husband Jess; seven great-grandchildren, Levi Coen, Luke Bloyd, Taylor Coen, Bryton Coen, Lynsay Bloyd, Cody Coen and Cap Lee.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, M.R.; parents, Alford and Pearl; sister, Opal Miller; and infant brother, Delmer.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Elkhart, Kansas with Pastor Terrell Giddens officiating. Interment will follow at the Rolla Cemetery in Rolla, Kansas. Friends may call Sunday, February 24, 2013 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart, Kansas. The family requests memorials be given in lieu of flowers to the Elkhart Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
