Valerie Y. Portillo - KSCB Radio News

Valerie Yvette Portillo, age 16, died Thursday evening, December 19,2013, in rural Meade County, Kansas, as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born November 9, 1997, at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Van Nuys, California, the daughter of Juan Carlos Portillo and Patricia Delatorre. A resident of Plains, Kansas, since 2007, moving from California, she was currently a sophomore at Southwestern Heights High School.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Plains. She enjoyed playing sports and was a member of the Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball teams at Southwestern Heights High School.

She is survived by:

Two sisters, Natalie Portillo of Plains, Kansas

Jackie C. De La Torre of Plains, Kansas

Two brothers, Ramon Saul Hernandez of Plains, Kansas

Maternal grandparents, Doroteo and Maria De La Torre of Plains, Kansas

Two uncles, Hector Gabriel De La Torre of Plains, Kansas

Francisco De La Torre of Plains, Kansas

She is preceded in death by her mother on December 19, 2013.

Vigil services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Liberal, Kansas. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Liberal. Friends may call 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow services in the Plains Cemetery, Plains, Kansas.

The family would welcome memorials to the Delatorre family fund established at the Plains State Bank in care of the funeral home.
