Rachel E. Applegate, age 92, died Monday, March 18, 2024, at Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born March 11, 1932, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Lee M. and Dolores (Rodriguez) King. 

Rachel grew up in Ulysses. After graduating from high school, she attended college. Rachel married Edwin A. Applegate on November 18, 1961. They raised their family in Ulysses. Her family was her number one. She worked at the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital and the Dr. Marshall Brewer Clinic. She also worked at the Grant County Library and was a nanny for the Pinnick family. Rachel was an active member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church and loved her job at the Grant County Health Department. It gave her great joy to work with young mothers and their babies.

Rachel is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Chandley of Hutchinson; son, Steven C. King and wife, Ginger, of Newton; sister, Rosalie King of Hutchinson; brother, Johnny Lee King of Ulysses; brother-in-law, Dan Rios of Ulysses; grandchildren, Tracey Lytle and husband, Mike, Shannon Hendricks and husband, Tim, Christopher King and wife Lynae and Carrie Claassen and husband Lance; great-grandchildren, Henry Claassen, Ava Claassen, Andrew Morales, Cassie Porter, Michael and Aubree Hendricks and Seth Hendricks; great-great-grandchildren, Victoria King, Chloe King, Landon McClintock, Dawson Hendricks and Anneliese Hendricks.
  
Rachel is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Dolores King; husband, Edwin Applegate; and sister, Mary Rios.

Rosary will be Friday, March 22, 2024, at 9:00 AM and Funeral Mass will be follow at 10:00 AM both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Eric Gyamfi officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W.
