Opal Hammond

Opal (Hicks) Hammond, age 96, was born April 20, 1923, in Pontiac, Missouri, to Earl Everett Hicks and Catherine (Katie) Buhler (some records show the last name as Beeler).
She went to be with her Lord and Saviour June 10, 2019, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. 
Opal came to Johnson with her first husband Marvin Vernon Stillings, they were married in January 1945 in Ava, Missouri. No children were born to this union as her husband could not have children.
 
Opal married Ivan Eugene Hammond, September 6, 1952, in Clayton, New Mexico. To this union, four children were born; Shiela Kay in 1953, Vicky Jean in 1955, Violet Blanche in 1962, and Julia O’Linda in 1965.
 Together with her husband, they ran the Wagon Wheel Cafe in Johnson for many years. 
 
Opal was a firm believer in God, never wavering from her faith. She loved working in her garden growing vegetables, several fruit trees, and a pecan tree. She loved growing flowers and spent a lot of time outside tending her yard and garden. 
 
She is survived by three daughters; Shiela Hammond of Mooreland, Oklahoma, Vicky Jasper and husband Robert of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Julia Chaknova and husband Paul of Boulder, Colorado; grandchildren, Jared Wait and wife Christian, Opal Wait, Crystal Pierce, Chris Spence, Elizabeth Durbin, Ryan Chaknova; step-grandsons, James Jasper, and Kyle Jasper; great-grandchildren, Braiden, Caleb, and Sydnee Wait, Aubrey Wait, and Rhiannon Wait, Autumn and James Kelley, Keely Dennett, Hunter Stephens, Joe Robinson; step-great-grandchildren, Alyssa Clarkson and husband Seth, Austin Jasper; three great-grandchildren, Aria Michoeby, Cole Micheoby; and step-great-grandson, Connor Clarkson.
 
Opal is preceded in death by first husband, Marvin Vernon Stillings in 2005; Ivan Eugene Hammond on February 23, 1987; daughter, Violet Blanche Hammond on March 16, 1971; great-grandson, Hunter Ivan Wait on April 18, 2007; grandson, Brandon Wait on July 14, 2007; four sisters, Wilma Archuleta, Willie Licklider, Jessie Hicks, and Ora Hodges.
 
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 17, 2019, at Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas, with Reverend Kurt Rovenstine officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM, with family present, on Monday, June 17, 2019, at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
