Mary Jean Hatfield

Mary Jean Hatfield, age 82, passed away Friday evening, August 13, 2021, at the Fowler Residential Care Center, Fowler, Kansas.

She was born July 23, 1939, at Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Mary Elizabeth (Nelson) Mendenhall.  As a young girl she attended school in Fowler, graduating from Fowler High School in 1957.  She later attended Wichita State University for a year.  On July 11, 1958, she married Norman (Cokey) Hatfield at Fowler.  After their marriage the couple made their home and raised their family in rural Fowler.  She worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s business for several years.  In 1981, she began working for the Fowler Nursing Home as a CNA and a CMA.  In 1984, she graduated from St. Mary of the Plains with her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and continued to work for the Fowler Nursing Home as a registered nurse, achieving the position of Director of Nursing and Superintendent.  After eleven years she began working at the Minneola Nursing Home and later Trinity Nursing Home in Dodge City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Christian Matrons, the 3 C Club, Kayettes, and was a volunteer for the 4-H club.  She enjoyed scrapbooking and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by three sons, Rick of Lawton, Oklahoma, Keith of Jacksonville, Florida, and Les of Glendale, Arizona; a daughter, Karen Roth of Fowler; a brother Chester Mendenhall of Wichita, Kansas; and a sister, Barb Clark of Cimarron; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Billy Mendenhall and Forest Mendenhall; and a sister, Joan Dykstra

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2021, at the Fowler Cemetery, Fowler.  Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade, Kansas.

The family would welcome memorials to the First Christian Church or The Cross Rodeo Bible Camp in care of the funeral home.
