Majorie Dettmer Stephenson

Marjorie Dettmer Stephenson, 91, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, February 10th, while in the company of family members, at Cedars House, McPherson, Kansas.

Marjorie was born in rural Hayne, Kansas on July 28, 1921, a daughter of Nell (Harding) and George Henry Dettmer.

Mardie attended the Hayne Kansas grade school and graduated from Liberal High School, Liberal, Kansas.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church McPherson, KS, and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberal, Kansas, Hooker and Enid, Oklahoma.

Through the years Mardie was a homemaker and worked as a telephone operator in Hooker, Oklahoma, owned and operated Mardie’s Drapery Den in Hooker and Enid, Oklahoma; worked in several dress shops, and sold Merle Norman cosmetics in Liberal, Kansas and volunteered at the Save-N-Share in McPherson, Kansas.

Through the years they lived in Liberal, Kansas then moved to Hooker, Oklahoma from 1951 to 1964 and moved to Enid, Oklahoma from 1964 to 1980 then moved to Liberal, Kansas from 1980 to 2000 then moved to McPherson, Kansas. Mardie enjoyed music and playing the piano, oil painting, flower gardening, decorating her home for each season.

Mardie was united in marriage to Jewel Franklin Stephenson on February 16, 1941 at Liberal, Kansas. Jewel died on March 6, 1983.

Surviving family members include her son, Stanley L. Stephenson and his wife Manelia, of McPherson, Kansas; her sister Jan Walden, of Chickasha, Oklahoma; her two grandchildren, Jeri D Stephenson and her husband Michael Spickelmier, of Atchison, Kansas and Craig A. Stephenson and his wife Jana, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; her four great-grandchildren, Isaac Papineau, Luke Papineau, Jewel Stephenson, and Hope Stephenson; her four step-great-grandchildren, Blake Mathis, Chase Mathis, Jack Spickelmier, and Nathan Spickelmier; her niece Gail Hufferd and her husband Doug, of Stockton, Missouri; her nephew Kyle Barrington and his wife Dolly, of Chickasha, Oklahoma; other relatives and a host of friends.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jewel; and a brother, Ivan Dettmer.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Glidden – Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.

Friends are invited to call from 9:00 a.m. to service time on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Brenneman Funeral Home, Liberal, Kansas.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Brenneman Funeral Home, Liberal, Kansas. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.
