Lorraine “Pat” Deister

Lorraine Marie (Pat) Deister, age 86, of Ulysses, Kansas died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at The Legacy at Park View in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born September 4, 1924 in Temple, Texas, the daughter of James and Marie (Stepan) Lancaster.

Pat graduated from Temple High School, attended Temple Junior College, and Draughons Business College in Austin, Texas. During World War II she was a payroll clerk at McCloskey General Army Hospital. Pat married Raymond L. Deister in Temple, Texas, on March 31, 1945. After he was discharged from the service, they moved to Kansas City, then to Ulysses in 1949 to work with Amoco Oil Company. After several transfers, they returned to Ulysses in 1962. She was the bookkeeper for T.M. Deal Lumber Company. Pat was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, a member of Ulysses Art Association, American Needlepoint Guild, and the American Legion Auxiliary; where she served as a local chapter President and also held state offices.

She is survived by four sons, James Deister and wife Rita of Salina, Kansas, Robert Deister and wife Beverly of Buhler, Kansas, Cole Deister and wife Niccole of Johnstown, Colorado, Casey Deister of Evanston, Wyoming; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond on June 20, 1993; and one brother, Col. (Ret.) James W. Lancaster.

Vigil and rosary service will be held Friday, May 13, 2011 at 7:30 PM and funeral mass will be held Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:00 AM; both at the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Trong Binh Tran officiating. Internment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, May 13, 2011 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Mary, Queen of Peace Scholarship Fund, American Legion Auxiliary or Donor’s Choice all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
