Letcher Waechter

Letcher Waechter, age 80, died Sunday, January 8, 2023, at her home in Ulysses. She was born July 16, 1942, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Lester Roy and Olive Helen (Lachenmaier) Green.

Letcher grew up in Kearny County, graduated high school in Deerfield, and furthered her education at Fort Hays State University. Letcher married Carl Donald Waechter on June 4, 1961, in Lakin. She worked beside Carl on the family farm and enjoyed being a homemaker. She also found time to work in her yard and quilt. Letcher and her children cleaned the church for many years and she made many worship banners. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Red Hat Society, and the Moldie Oldie’s Group. Letcher and RueNell Ford owned and operated the Tumble Weed Turquoise Store inside the Paddock Western Wear Store for many years. Letcher’s greatest joy was her family and friends. She loved the time she was able to spend with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She was known as Granny to many.

Letcher is survived by her son, Troy Waechter and wife Ronda of Ulysses; daughters, Pamela Pleming and husband Jim of Amarillo, Texas, and Lori Seger and husband Verl of Ulysses; sister, Jeri Lynn Taylor of Wichita; grandchildren, Amber Tafoya and husband Alex, Heather Mitchell and husband Paul, Shalie Waechter and fiancé Matt Johnson, Jace Nuckles, Jason Pleming and wife Brandi, Tyler Baker and wife Kelley, Timothy Baker and wife Erica, Jara Houghton and husband Johnathan, Tiffany Webb and husband Russell, Tolan Seger and wife Brittney, and Larissa Seger; and great-grandchildren, Avery and Axel Tafoya, Oliver and Blaze Mitchell, Keeler and Kallahan Baker, Luka and Grant Baker, Alexander and Phoenix Houghton, Bryon and Brody Webb, Haylee and Sutter Seger, and Rocky Seger.  

Letcher is preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Olive Green; husband, Carl Waechter; sister, Glenda Sue Green; grandson, Karlton Waechter; and brother-in-law, Noel Taylor.

Funeral service will be Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ulysses with Reverend Santi Keinbaum officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin. Visitation will be Friday, January 13, 2023, from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM with family present from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
