James Leroy “Tornado” Esser, age 83, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. He was born on August 6, 1942, in Larned, Kansas, the son of Robert Oliver and Velma Lara (Gagnebin) Esser.
After graduating high school, James enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1962 serving on the USS Richards Edward. James married Elvira Flores on March 24, 1984, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He worked at Morton Salt Company in Hutchinson and after moving to Ulysses worked for Smyth Oil and Gas. James enjoyed reading and hunting arrowheads and was a Jehovah’s Witness.
He is survived by his wife, Elvira of their home in Ulysses; son, Rafael Esser and wife, Katie, of Ulysses; one grandson, Joseph James Esser; and extended family.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Velma Esser; and brothers, Robert, Ron and Sam Esser.
