James A. “Jim” Williams, age 75, of Ulysses, Kansas died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born October 25, 1935 in Lakin , Kansas , the son of Thomas Vernon Williams and Dorothy (Hagler) Williams Yakel.

Jim, a farmer, graduated from Lakin High School in 1953. He married Shirley Pointer on July 2, 1955 in Clayton , New Mexico . They have lived in Ulysses since 1968. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He was an avid bridge player. Jim also loved to read, watch sports and was a KU sports fan. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, kids and grandkids. Jim will be remembered for his good cooking and his wonderful dry sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; two sons, Mitch Williams and wife Sue of Wichita, Kansas, K.C. and wife Kathy of Edmond, Oklahoma; two daughters, Kathy Allen and husband Tom, Christine Norton and husband Neil all of Hugoton; four brothers, Harold Williams, Keith Williams both of Lakin, Kansas, Tom Williams of South Dakota, Rick Yakel of Lakin, Kansas; five sisters, Doris Smith of Farmersville, Louisiana, Marion Weber of Lakin, Kansas, Vera Calvin of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Joyce Randolph of Lakin, Kansas, Jeanie Fraser of Garden City, Kansas; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Karah Shawn Williams; one granddaughter, Karah Dawn Core; two brothers, Robert Williams, Thomas Vernon Williams Jr.; and one sister, Yvonne Yakel.

A praise service and celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Gerry Dupuis officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the Gideon’s International or Grant County Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave , Ulysses , KS 67880 .
