Jackie Ray Wisdom

Joe Denoyer - October 18, 2023 3:05 pm

Jackie Ray Wisdom, 83, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton, Kansas. He was the son of Charlie Edward Wisdom and Geraldean Frits Smith, born on April 11, 1940, in Hobart, Oklahoma.

Jack served in the National Guard; when he got out of the services, he met Rose at a cafe in Canadian, Texas. The story told is the moment he saw her, he knew he would marry that sweetie pie.

He married at 18 to his first love, Rose Mary Hornback, who was 15 years old. They married in Pampa, Texas, April 29, 1959. Their first Christmas married, they had a tumbleweed out of the field covered in tinsel. They were married for over 50 years until Rose passed away in March of 2010. Jackie and Rose had five children: Rose, Jerry, Glen, Linda, and Stephen.

Meanwhile, raising their children, they had moved to several different states, settling in Woodward, Oklahoma, throughout the kids in high school. They later moved to Laverne, Oklahoma, in 1989, where they began owning and operating an oilfield supply store. Later, they opened a few more other than Laverne; they had Guymon and Beaver also. It was called JW Pump Supply.

Jack worked in the oilfield for most of his life for a company named Rowan Drilling. He also delivered the daily Oklahoman with his family. If Rose couldn’t help deliver, Stephen was a big help in remembering the route.

Before the children, Jack wasn’t afraid to do other jobs to keep things going; he worked at a golf course. He was very good with his hands, including playing the guitar. He was once in a band called “Foggy Bottom Boys.”

Jackie enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, farming, and being on the tractor. He attained his pilot’s license in 1995 with his son Jerry.

He once had a bull named “Scotty.” He was a tame bull, and Jackie made sure all the grandkids took turns riding him.

In May 2016, he and high school sweetheart Linda McCoy reunited and married on May 21, 2016. He loved her dearly, and they settled in Hugoton, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, Hugoton, KS.; three sons, Jerry Wisdom and wife Lilly, Tishomingo, OK., Glen Wisdom and wife Annette, Laverne, OK., Stephen Wisdom, Laverne, OK.; one daughter, Linda Taylor and husband Sam, Laverne, OK.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one great-great-great grandbaby on the way.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Geraldean; wife, Rose Mary; daughter, Rose Marie; brothers, Glen and Earl; sister, Marie; granddaughter, Jessica Taylor.

Later, a private service will be at Laverne Cemetery in Laverne, Oklahoma.

Cremation has occurred and is handled by Robson Funeral Home of Hugoton, Kansas.
