Herb (H.C.) Klassen

Joe Denoyer - September 15, 2017 8:24 am

Herb (H.C.) Klassen passed from this life into Heaven on September 14, 2017, at their home in the country. He was born on January 26, 1940, in Garden City, Kansas, to Adolf W. Klassen and Iva (Ault) Klassen.

Herb attended school in Syracuse, Kansas, where he graduated from Syracuse High School. He was a third generation farmer in Hamilton County.

He married his “Little Woman” Velma Stokes on May 29, 1960, and to this union was born a daughter, Kitty, and a son, Mike.

Most of Herb’s life, he ran cattle, and his family called him a cattle-aholic. That was his favorite thing to do. He also farmed but it really was a sideline to be able to run more cattle. He had a favorite horse “Joker” and his dog “Boots”.

Herb received Christ as his personal Saviour on August 10, 1958. He had been going to church with Velma and her family and by hearing and understanding the plan of salvation, he asked Christ to forgive him of his sins and to be Lord and Master of his life while out driving the tractor. Thereafter, he had a heart to see souls come to the knowledge of salvation and that is why he supported many missionaries all over the world.

Those surviving are his wife, Velma Klassen; daughter, Kitty Banning and husband Jimmy of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Laraine Robert and husband Steve of Sterling, Kansas; grandchildren, Jerrad (Alyssa) Banning, Katarina (David) Phillips, Kraig (Tressa) Klassen, Jessica (Austin) Earle, Kandra (Luke) Schweizer; five great-granddaughters; one, great-grandson, and two more on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Eileen (Glen) Bishop.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents; brother, William (Bill) Klassen; son, Mike Klassen; twin grandsons, and a great-grandson.

Funeral service will be at 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Pastor James Berry officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, September 15, 2017, at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Herb Klassen Memorial Mission Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
