Frances L. Roberts

Frances L. Roberts, age 90, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Monday, February 25, 2019, at Western Prairie Senior Living in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born January 16, 1929, on the family farm in Collingsworth County, near Wellington, Texas, the daughter of Carlton and Cora (Bowles) Vernon.

Frances grew up in Wellington, Texas, and graduated high school in 1946. She married Charles Lynn Roberts on December 4, 1946. While they were living in LeFors; Richard, Morris and Jan were born. Frances was the editor, advertisor, and wrote stories for the LeFors Progress Newspaper.

In 1963, her family moved to Ulysses, Kansas. Frances started working at Grant County Library in 1964 doing children’s story hour and progressed through jobs until she became the Director of the library; a position she held from 1981-2006. Frances graduated from KPlace, a continuing education program for libraries. She was also instrumental in planning and overseeing the library expansion project from 2000-2002.

She was a member of Southwest Kansas Library Association, Kansas Library Association, American Library Association, Business and Professional Women, Church of Christ, Ulysses Rotary, Paul Harris Fellowship, and Womens Aglow.

Frances loved to sew, cook, garden, can vegetables, and take her daily walk. She also loved reading and telling stories to her kids and grandkids. She will be greatly missed by friends and family.

Frances is survived by her son, Richard Roberts and wife Leta of Hooker, Oklahoma; daughter, Jan Trejo and husband Rick of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Holli (Roberts) Simpson and husband Terry of Conway, Arkansas; brother, Don Vernon and wife Shirley of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, David Roberts of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jason Roberts and wife Anna of Edmond, Oklahoma, Allen Roberts and fiancé Sophie Brandon of San Antonio, Texas, Joshua Roberts and wife Brittany of Carthage, Missouri, Rachelle Clarke and husband Jamie of Hurst, Texas, Natalie Romero and husband Rocky of Gardner, Kansas, and Abby Rice and husband Peter of Searcy, Arkansas; and great-grandchildren, Jace Roberts of Edmond, Oklahoma, Alivea Roberts, Brenlly Roberts, and Dawson Roberts all of Carthage, Missouri, Mayson Clarke, Micah Clarke, and Zoe Clarke of Hurst, Texas, Caden Romero, Cristian Romero, and Cruse Romero all of Gardner, Kansas, and Soren Rice and Asher Rice, and a great-granddaughter Rice expected in June, all of Searcy, Arkansas.

Frances is preceded in death by her parents in 1984; husband, Charles Lynn Roberts in 1976; and son, Morris Lynn Roberts in 2012.

Funeral service will be Friday, March 1, 2019, at 10:00 AM at the Ulysses Church of Christ with Minister Warren Baldwin, Richard Roberts, and Rick Trejo officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 28, 2019, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with family present 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Ulysses Church of Christ Leadership Training for Christ in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
