Esteban Gallegos, Jr., age 72, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. He was born September 26, 1949, in Lazaro Cárdenas, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Esteban Sr. and Encarnacion (Nieto) Gallegos.

Esteban moved to the United States at age 17 living in Colorado. In 1969, he moved to Ulysses. He married Raquel Romero on October 24, 1970, at the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Esteban began working at Ulysses Irrigation Pipe in 1970 and then Kroy Industries; retiring after 45 years as a yard foreman. He loved spending time at his farm working with his cattle. Esteban enjoyed teaching his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and neighborhood kids to ride horses, fish, hunt, and to help with chores around the farm. He was there for whoever needed his help; sharing his farm crops and helping others was such a joy to him. He also enjoyed playing on the El Ranchito softball team for years. Esteban was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church and served as a lector and communion minister.

Esteban is survived by his wife, Raquel of their home; son, Esteban Gallegos III and wife Sophia of Dodge City, Kansas; four grandchildren, Alexis Marie, Esteban IV, Abigahil, and Josue Gallegos; siblings, Mela Gonzales of Chihuahua, Mexico, Lorenzo Gallegos of Ulysses, Lydia Romero of Ulysses, Rita Moncayo of Ulysses, Vincente of Chihuahua, Mexico, and Alma Veronica Rosales of Dodge City.

Esteban is preceded in death by his parents.

Rosary is Friday, October 29, 2021, at 7:00 PM and Funeral Mass will be Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 10:00 AM both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, October 29, 2021, from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the David Romero, Jr. Scholarship Fund or Down Syndrome Society of Wichita in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
