Elsie C. Porter, age 86, passed away Wednesday evening, January 1, 2020, at the Lone Tree Retirement Center, Meade, Kansas.

She was born July 29, 1933, at Meade, Kansas, the daughter of Gottfried F. and Hannah (Borchers) Blehm. As a young girl, she attended school in Meade, graduating from Meade High School in 1951.

On May 27, 1951, she married Herbert Mitchell (Mitch) Porter at Meade. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Meade where she raised her family. She later began working for Meade District Hospital in the business office for twenty-two years. On January 19, 1998, her husband Mitch passed away. On February 14, 1999, she married William Lee (Bill) Schaben at Meade. He precedes her in death on April 19, 2016.

She was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church, serving as a past Sunday school teacher, a member of LWML, and Thrivent Finical. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, shopping, and going to casinos with friends and family. Some of Elsie’s favorite things were faith, forgiveness, family, friends, flowers, and food.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Porter of Meade, Jeff Porter of Meade, and Keith Porter of Columbus, Mississippi; three daughters, Janet Cook of Meade, Cathy Rosenberry of Meade, and Judy Fox of Towanda, Kansas; a brother, Richard Blehm of Meade; a sister, Katherine Borger of Meade; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husbands; parents; a brother, Paul Blehm; sisters, Myra Kurth, Wilma Holmes, and Eva Elizabeth Blehm; and a son son-in-law, Macy Cook.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2020, at Saint John Lutheran Church, Meade. In accordance to her requests, cremation has taken place. Interment will follow in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

The family would welcome memorials to Saint John Lutheran Church in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary or to a random act of kindness in memory of Elsie.
