Donald E. “Ed” Lewis, age 92, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born July 30, 1926, in Grant County, Kansas, the son of John Huston and Lucille Recca (Towler) Lewis.

Ed was a farmer and lifetime resident of Grant County. He graduated high school when he was a junior and joined the United States Navy. Ed married Joan Schwein on August 21, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Ulysses. He was a member of Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79, served as a Grant County Commissioner, was on the Grant County Fair Board, Southwest Kansas Regional Planning Board, and was a Grant County Citizen of the Year. Ed will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of fishing, gardening, and listening to polka music.

Ed is survived by his children, Teri Higgs and husband David of Ulysses, Tim Lewis and wife Jan of Ralls, Texas, and Allison Carpenter of Norman, Oklahoma; sister, Mrytle Ferris of Santa Barbara, California; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan in 2010; son-in-law, Rusty Carpenter; grandson, Shane; and siblings, Dick, Mable, and Doug.

Graveside service will be 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at the Ulysses Cemetery with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating. Military rites will be provided by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Memorial contributions may be given to the Historic Adobe Museum or donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
