Earl Dean Mitchell, age 83, died Friday, October 22, 2021, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on December 1, 1937, the son of Richey Brown Mitchell and Elsie May (Kilgore) Mitchell.

Dean married Evelyn Joan McEntire on March 14, 1964, in Liberal, Kansas. They were married 54 years until her death on November 8, 2018. He raised one son, David Lynn and two daughters, Judy Ann and Jamie Lou. Dean was proud to have been in the US Navy where he was the ship’s barber. He worked for Liberal Iron and Metal and later opened and operated Mitchell’s Garden Center for 35 years. He was an avid gardener. Dean and Joan traveled to Art and Craft shows in New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to show Joan’s Gourd Art that she beautifully decorated. He cared for Joan for many years during her illness.

Dean will fondly be remembered as a wonderful friend, loving father, and caring husband.

Survived by:

His sons, Earl Dean Mitchell Jr. and

David Lynn Mitchell of Liberal, Kansas

His daughter, Judy Ann Gill of Amarillo, Texas

Three Grandchildren, Melody Dawn Hunter, Tryston Matthew Ellis and Dylan Jacob Ellis

And two great grandchildren, Thomas Douglas and Wyatt Gage.

Preceded in death by

Both his parents, Richey and Elsie Mitchell, his wife, Evelyn Joan Mitchell, his daughter, Jamie Lou Mitchell, four brothers, Lloyd, Clyde and Robert “Bob” and Raymon, and three sisters, Louise, Mildred and Inis.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas, the family will be present from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM to receive friends.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery. Pastor Randy Mitchell and Pastor Eddie Scoggins presiding.
