Dene Ward Olney

Dene Ward Olney, 86, of Tyrone, Oklahoma passed away February 3, 2012 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas.

Dene was born the son of Edward Marion and Reba Mae Daniels Olney on May 18, 1925 at Hooker, Oklahoma.

He was a WWII Veteran serving in the United States Navy as Gunners Mate 3rd Class on the USS Woodworth (DD460) in the Pacific. Dene was honored with the American Area Service Metal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Camp Medal (2 stars) and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon before receiving an Honorable Discharge on December 16, 1945. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3166 in Liberal, Kansas.

He married Dora May Lowe on July 14, 1946 in Cimarron, Kansas.

Dene worked several years in the farming, oilfield and casing industries. In 1949 he was employed by Blakemore Brothers Warehouse which eventually became Nash Finch Warehouse and retired in 1987 after 40 years of service as the shipping and warehouse manager.

He was a most giving, devoted and loving family man. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and the company of his many friends.

Dene was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers (Alfred, Chester and Neal); son Marvin Eugene Olney; and two grandchildren (David Dene Wanzer and Stacey L. Long).

Survivors include his wife, Dora May of the home; one son, Richard Olney of Tyrone, Oklahoma; three daughters, Beverley Olney and husband Steve Armstrong of Tyrone, Oklahoma, Marva Jean Olney of Enid Oklahoma and Danita Olney Anderson and husband Darwin Anderson of Mascotte, Florida; one brother, Boyd Olney and wife Claretta of Tyrone, Oklahoma; 5 grand children and 17 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Hooker Cemetery with Rev. Jack Jacobs officiating. Military services will also be conducted under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. of Hooker, Oklahoma.
