David Romero, Jr.

David Romero, Jr., age 66, died Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.  He was born October 23, 1953, in Raymondville, Texas, the son of David Sr. and Gloria (Gutierrez) Romero.  

 

At the age of 10, David moved with his family to Ulysses.  He attended Grant County Rural High School until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1974.  After serving in the United States and Korea, he was honorably discharged in 1977. David also served for two years in the Army National Guard.  He returned to Ulysses and enrolled in Liberal Vo-Tech and received his degree in auto mechanics.  He then worked at UIP, Moody’s Engine Service, and John Deere, and for the last 25 years was employed as a mechanic with Kansas State University Southwest Extension Office in Garden City, Kansas.  David, along with his siblings, was a co-owner and operator of El Ranchito Café in Ulysses.  In his spare time, he helped different family members remodel their homes, enjoyed fishing, and hunting.  He most enjoyed supporting his grandkids and attending their sporting events.  David was a member of GI Forum, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

 

David married Carol Asebedo on November 12, 1971, in Ulysses, Kansas, she survives.  Other survivors include his son, David Romero III and wife Velma of Ulysses; daughters, Michelle Romero of Ulysses, and Veronica Gonzales and husband Jacob of Dallas, Georgia;  brothers, Enrique Romero and Leobardo Romero both of Ulysses; sisters, Raquel Gallegos, Maggie Garcia, Grace Hernandez, Minnie Fischer, all of Ulysses, Norma Pauda of Lakin, and Olga Pauda of Ulysses; and 12 grandchildren.

 

David is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Juan Romero; and sister, Lydia Trujillo.

 

Funeral service will be Monday, October 12, 2020, at 10:00 AM at Oasis Church in Ulysses with Pastor Rafael Franco officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery with military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. The funeral service will be available on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Live.  Public visitation is Sunday, October 11, 2020, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.  Memorial contributions may be given to David Romero, Jr. Scholarship Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W.
