Cora Avitia, age 78, of Johnson, Kansas passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025, in Johnson, Kansas. She was born on September 22, 1947, in Ordway, Colorado, the daughter of Steven H. & Carmen (Lovato) Minjarez.
In 1972, Cora married the love of her life, Hermilo Avitia, in Rocky Ford, Colorado. Their bond was strong and enduring, together they built a beautiful life. In 1974, they moved to Johnson, Kansas, where they raised their three children.
Cora was known for her commitment to service. She spent 29 years at Stanton County Hospital, where she served as the Head of Housekeeping. Her kindness and leadership left a lasting impact on her coworkers and the many patients and families who knew her. Beyond her career, Cora was an influential and trusted presence in Johnson. She was always willing to lend a hand, often helping friends and neighbors with interpreting, important paperwork, applications and even tax filing. Her support made a real difference in the lives of others.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Cora loved playing card games, especially poker. She also enjoyed dancing, moving with the same warmth and happiness she brought into every room. She will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her children, Tina (Ernesto) Olivas, Alicia (Juan) Gonzalez, Gildardo Avitia; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; Siblings, Johnnie Minjarez, Arthur Minjarez, Pauline Gallegos, and Hope Martinez.
Cora is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lucy Salinas, Connie Archuleta; and husband, Hermilo Avitia-Misclez.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Rosary will begin at 7:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson, Kansas. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 17, 2025, with Reverend Eric Gyamfi, officiating at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, Kansas. Interment will follow at Stanton County Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Cora Avitia Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas.
