Satanta – Carol A. Wilson, 80, died January 5, 2023, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit. She was born on December 29, 1942, in Hartner, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer and Dorothy (Joachims) Hartwig.

Carol’s childhood was spent in Alva, Oklahoma. She graduated from Alva High School in 1960 and went on to further her education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, majoring in education, graduating in 1963. Later in her career, she completed her master’s degree in educational administration at Fort Hays State University. While in high school, she met Carl Wilson. They were united in marriage on August 4, 1962. To this union two girls were born, Kimberly Renea and Stacey Lyn.

In 1966, the couple moved to Satanta and took their first teaching jobs. Carol taught junior high English and 8th grade physical education. Carol then took the secretary position at the Satanta Grade School. In 1980, she moved to the USD 507 District office and became the business
manager and board clerk. Late in her career, she was also the business manager and board clerk for the Ulysses School District. After retirement, she traveled the State of Kansas presenting and consulting for KPERS (Kansas Public Retirement System). Carol was involved in the community
and spent many years as the bookkeeper for the Satanta Recreation Commission. Carol was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, sewing and quilting. She enjoyed traveling with her family and especially on the motorcycle with Carl and the motorcycle group. Carol was an accomplished quilter. She enjoyed making quilts for her family and spending time with the quilting group. Her greatest joy was attending her grandchildren’s school and sporting activities.

Carol is survived by two daughters, Kim Skinner and husband Tim of Montezuma and Stacey Hedges of Garnett; seven grandchildren, Andrew Skinner and wife Amber of Liberal, Cheston Skinner and wife Taylor of Garden City, Taten Skinner and Lucas Skinner both of Montezuma, Cale
Hedges of Beloit, Remington Dreher and husband Zachary of Emporia, and Riley Hedges of Garnett; five great grandchildren, Ryann and Clifton Skinner of Garden City, Sawyer and Piper Skinner of Liberal, and Ryker Dreher of Emporia; a sister, Mary McGowan and husband Kenneth of
Satanta, and a brother, Carl Hartwig of Alva. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; son-in-law, Lance Hedges; and a sister-in-law, Jane Hartwig.

Funeral service will be held at Satanta United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 10:00 AM with Rev. Elizabeth Winger-Young presiding. Graveside services will be held at the Alva Municipal Cemetery in Alva, Oklahoma at 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2023, with Rev. Tim Roggow presiding. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Sublette on Friday, January 13, 2023, from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Carl and Carol Wilson Memorial Scholarship or the Satanta District Hospital Longterm Care Unit in care of the funeral home.
