Carl Leon Barnes, 87, formerly of Turpin, OK died on Saturday April 16, 2016 at Grove, OK.

He was born on June 18, 1928 to Thomas and Carrie (Simmonds) Barnes at Turpin, OK.

On June 23, 1957 he married Karen Platz at the Liberal, KS. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2005.

He was a graduate of Turpin High School and Oklahoma State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Agriculture Education. Carl worked as a County Agent, Kansas Department of Transportation. He enjoyed Organic Gardening and Native American Corn Research. He was the recipient of the Cherokee Medal of Honor in 2000 at Tahlequah, OK; had written articles in the Oklahoma Today and National Geographic; was featured on KFOR Channel 4 Galen Culver’s “Is this a great State or What”; and before the passing of his wife he traveled the Unites States with her giving presentations about Native American Corn.

He is survived by one son Carl V Barnes and wife Becky of Grove , OK
2 Grandsons Sean R Barnes of Grove, OK and Craig A Barnes and wife Caitlin and 2 great-grand daughters of Stillwater, OK

He was also preceded in death his parents, a son AV Barnes, and five siblings

A Memorial Service will be at 10:00am Saturday April 30, 2016 at the Miller Mortuary Chapel.

There is no viewing as cremation has already taken place.
