Martinez Takes State

Joe Denoyer - May 7, 2024 4:22 pm

On Sunday, May 5, six wrestlers from Liberal Wrestling Club competed at the USAWKS
State Freestyle and Greco Wrestling Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.

Hayleen Martinez was one of those that attended. She took first for both Greco and
Freestyle in the Junior Girls 190 weight class, earning her 2nd and 3rd state titles in 2024.

“The USAWKS tournament was a record breaking year for the state and for Liberal
Wrestling Club. Even with the competitor numbers being the largest in history, Hayleen didn’t let
that stand in her way. She swept the competition, only letting 1 match go into the 2nd period for
the Freestyle State title. Hayleen has earned 3 state titles for this year alone, making her a
‘Triple Crown’ for Liberal Wrestling in the 2023-2024 season,” Coach Bill Holcomb stated. “We
are very proud of her and look forward to seeing her future accomplishments.”

“Martinez is the first wrestler (to my knowledge) in Liberal to accomplish this! She has
great talent and is very coachable–especially for someone who has only wrestled for two
seasons,” Coach Krista Holcomb said.

Ian Holcomb took first in Greco and Freestyle for 10U 105 as the only competitor to sign
up for that age and weight. He then wrestled up in weight, wrestling kids that weighed in 20+
pounds heavier. For Greco, he took 2nd and 3rd in Freestyle.

Other wrestlers placed as follows:
Greco- Alyvia Holcomb, 8U girls 57-62, 2nd; TJ Thomas, 10U 84, 5th; Elias Holcomb,
14U 97, DNP; and Adriel Gomez, 14U 136, 3rd.

Freestyle – Alyvia Holcomb, 8U girls 57-62, 2nd; TJ Thomas, 10U 84, DNP; Elias
Holcomb, 14U 97, DNP; and Adriel Gomez, 14U 136, 2nd.

Open mats and practices will continue throughout the summer on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 6:30-8 PM at the LHS Wrestling Room.
