Liberal’s Kappelmann and Hugoton’s Martin Named to Shrine Bowl Roster

Two local high school football players will participate the the Kansas Shrine Bowl football game this summer. Liberal quarterback J. Brooks Kappelmann and Hugoton linebacker Isaac Martin make the West team. The rosters were announced Monday morning.
Kappelmann becomes the first Liberal player since Trenton Hammond in 2014 to make it on the Shrine Bowl roster. He is the first Liberal quarterback since Trace Haskell in 1998 to make the Shrine Bowl.
Brooks helped the Redskins to an 8-2 season and their best season in 20 years. He was 142-232 for 2,356 passing yards with 25 touchdowns and five interceptions. He rushed 121 times for 749 yards and 10 touchdowns. Kappelmann is the 42nd Redskin to make the Shrine Bowl.
Martin led the Hugoton Eagles to a 6-3 season and led the defense playing linebacker. He registered 61 tackles including eight tackles for loss. He had six batted passes and two interceptions including one for a 42 yard touchdown. Martin is the first Hugoton player to make the Shrine Bowl roster since Colton Lissolo in 2012. Martin is the 7th Hugoton Eagle to make the Shrine Bowl.
KANSAS– The roster of invitations for the 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth was announced during the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Selection Show on Monday, January 1st. The selections are the result of a combination of statewide media votes and Shrine Bowl coaching staff selections from a list of 457 nominees. The 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played on Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas.

In addition to playing in the annual East vs. West all-star football game, Kansas Shrine Bowl participants get the opportunity to meet and interact with the Patient Ambassadors from Shriners Children’s during the Hospital Experience Day. An event, that for many, is more impactful than any other event during the week of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. During the Hospital Experience Day, players come to understand that these children have put in the same kind of hard work, dedication and sacrifices they have; only their work has resulted in allowing them to walk, run, play, and live a full life.
