Liberal Puts Clamps Down Late

The Liberal girls avenged an earlier season loss to Garden City with a 53-40 win in the Big House Tuesday night.  Garden City did not score in the final six minutes of the game.

Liberal dominated the first half.  They led 14-5  early and 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.  The Lady Redskins led 18-7, 20-9, 23-12, and led at the half 28-14.  Liberal led 31-14 for a 17 point lead.  That’s when the Lady Buffaloes began their comeback.  LHS led 42-35 after three and Garden cut the LHS lead to two (42-40 with 6:04 to play.  Garden City didn’t score again.

Liberal shot 42 percent from the field and Garden City shot 35 percent.  Liberal forced Garden City into 19 turnovers and LHS only had nine.  LHS made 6-22 from three and Garden was 6-19.  LHS was 5-6 at the foul line and Garden was 8-14.

Bree Horyna had 14 points and five rebounds.  Halle Payton had 12 points and four three pointers.  Ashley Carrillo had 10 points and nine assists.

Liberal win their 35th straight at home and is 16-3 overall and 5-2 in the WAC.  Garden City is 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the WAC.  Liberal hosts Dodge City Thursday night for Senior Night at 6 with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45  on 1270 and kscbnews.net.  Liberal will host Garden City Wednesday night, March 3  at 7 for sub state.
