Liberal Girls Foiled by Fouls

The Liberal girls dropped their WAC opener 60-55 Friday night in Hays.  Hays won the game at the foul line going 24-40 while Liberal was 11-18 at the charity stripe.  It’s the first loss against Hays since 2018.  LHS had won 11 in a row in the series.

Liberal got off to a good start leading 8-2 and 13-6 after one.  It was 18-11 LHS in the second quarter before LHS settled for a 27-24 lead at the half.  The Lady Indians led for most of the third quarter.  Hays led 37-31 and 40-36 before leading Liberal 47-45 after three.  The Lady Red led 50-47 early in the fourth quarter.  Hays went on a 7-0 run to lead 54-50.  Hays led 58-53.  Liberal cut the lead to 58-55 with 56 seconds left.

Liberal shot 41 percent from the field and Hays shot 38 percent.  Liberal was 6-15 from three and Hays was 4-11.  Rebounding was even 27-27.  Liberal committed 20 turnovers compared to Hays with 16 turnovers.

Hailey Contreras was Epic Touch Player of the Game with 20 points.  Shamari Lewis added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Hays is 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the WAC.  Liberal is 4-3 and 0-1 in the WAC.  Liberal hosts Woodward January 2 at 6pm with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
