The Liberal Lady Redskins began 2024 with a 64-53 win over the Woodward Lady Boomers Tuesday night in the Big House. Liberal’s defense forced Woodward into 25 turnovers in the win.
Woodward led 6-2 early. But the Lady Red responded with a 13-0 run to lead 15-6. LHS led 16-10 after one quarter. Liberal led 27-13 in the second quarter before Woodward harassed Liberal into turnovers and went on a 10-2 run to make it 29-23. Liberal led 34-23 at halftime. Liberal’s lead ballooned to 13 at 40-23 in the third quarter and led 48-27 after three. Woodward got to within 10 at 48-38 but never cut the lead to single digits in that fourth quarter.
Liberal won despite 22 turnovers. Woodward shot 60 percent at 21-35 but Liberal shot 22 more times going 25-57 for 44 percent shooting. Woodward was 1-5 from three and Liberal was 4-16. Woodward miss-fired at the foul line with a 10-23 outing. Liberal was 10-14.
Hailey Contreras led Liberal with 19 points. Shamari Lewis had 13 points and nine rebounds. Kamilah Delgado had 13 points and eight rebounds. Zoey Torres scored 10 points and had five steals.
It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2009 and the first matchup in Liberal since 2008.
Woodward is 4-5 and Liberal is 5-3. LHS is 5-0 at home. Liberal hosts Garden City Tuesday night at 6pm in the Big House with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
