Late Run Lifts Gruver Past Liberal

Brock Kappelmann - January 26, 2022 6:37 am

Undefeated Gruver used an 11-0 run to finish the game to hold off the Liberal Lady Redskins 55-45 Tuesday night in the Big House.  Liberal led 45-44 from the 4:26 mark until Gruver took the lead with 2:10 remaining.  Gruver is 23-0.

Liberal got off to the strong start they needed to stay competitive with a team that still has three starters from a 22-3 team last year and a 38-2 state championship team in 2020.  LHS led 6-2 and 12-9 and led 12-11 after one quarter.  The Lady Red led 15-11 before the Lady Hounds went on a 10-0 run to lead 21-15.  Gruver led 26-19 at halftime.  LHS trimmed the Gruver lead to one at 28-27 with 5:25 to play.  Liberal trailed 30-29 before Gruver went on an 8-0 run to lead 38-29.  A deep 3 by Hailey Contreras made it 38-32.  Hallie West’s 3 made it 44-41 Gruver with 5:35 remaining.  West’s driving lay up gave Liberal the 45-44 lead with 4:26 to go.  Liberal got the ball on the right post with a chance to go up three.  But Gruver’s Allie Sparks blocked the shot leading the Lady Hounds on an 11-0 run to finish the game.

Gruver shot 43 percent and Liberal shot 35 percent.  Liberal was 3-18 from three pont range and Gruver was 2-8.  Gruver was 19-25 from the foul line and LHS was 8-8.  Ashley Carrillo scored 13 and Elle Hatcher scored a career high 12. Hailey Contreras scored nine.

Liberal is 9-3 and Gruver is 23-0.  Liberal hosts Guymon Friday night at 6 with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270, 92.3, and the KSCB and The Legend App.
