Lady Saints Win Opener in Utah

EPHRAIM, Uta. – Seward County Community College defeats Utah State Eastern 76-60 in their season opener in Ephraim, Utah. The Lady Saints started the game with a 12-0 lead and held the lead for the remainder of the game. Seward County will face Snow College tomorrow at 4 PM CT on the campus of the Badgers.

To start the game Seward county came out with a strong defense that turned into easy baskets on the offensive side. Hulda Joaquim connected on a three and forced Utah State into a timeout as the Lady Saints led 12-0 with 6:15 left in the first quarter. The Eagles continued to battle with Seward County but the Lady Saints ended the first quarter with a 22-11 lead.

With the lead, Seward County continued to a full-court press and keep Utah State Eastern on their heels. The Lady Saints added to their lead and took a 30-17 lead after an And-1 by Miyah Dubose the returning from last year’s team. After a Zhane Thompson corner three, the Lady Saints had their largest lead of the game 44-22 but the Eagles closed out the half on a 7-2 run but trailed Seward County 46-29.

To start the second half the Eagles came out on an 11-4 run to cut the lead down to ten points at 50-42. The Lady Saints responded with a  7-2 run to lead 57-42 after a Halima Salatthree-pointer with three minutes left in the third quarter. Both teams struggled to score for the remainder of the quarter but Seward County led 60-46 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Saints went on a 10-4 run capped off with a three-pointer from Zayla Tinner to lead 70-50. The Eagles continued to battle and trailed 72-60 with 2:28 left in the game. Seward County held them scoreless for the remainder of the game to win the game 76-60.

The Lady Saints will have their first true road test as they take on Snow College tomorrow at 4 PM CT.
