Great Bend Sweeps Redskins

The Great Bend Panthers swept the Liberal Redskins Friday afternoon and evening at the Great Bend Sports Complex.  The Panthers won game one 8-5 and took game two 6-0.  The Redskins have dropped six straight.

The Redskins built a 5-1 lead in game one.  LHS plated one in the first when Marco Alonso laced an RBI double to right center.  GBHS scored one in the first against Brooks Kappelmann.  LHS answered with three in the second.  Blayden Betts singled and Skyler Hubbard walked.  Brooks Kappelmann ripped a two RBI triple to left center.  Kappelmann scored on a wild pitch or the 4-1 lead.  Marco Alonso singled to lead off the third.  Erek Lira reached on a fielder’s choice.  He would later score on an error for  a 5-1 lead in the third.  LHS fell apart defensively in the bottom of the third.  The Panthers tied the game 5-5 scoring four runs on two hits and three errors.  GBHS scored three in the sixth for the 8-5 lead.  Great Bend out hit Liberal 8-4.  Liberal did not have a hit after the third. The Redskins walked 10 times but struck out 14 times.  Brooks Kappelmann pitched three innings with four strikeouts and one walk.  He allowed five runs but only one was earned.  Zayden Martinez went three innings with five strikeouts and three walks while allowing three runs.  Liberal had five errors.  Marco Alonso was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 2-2 and getting on base all four times.

LHS suffered their second WAC shutout loss in game two.  GBHS scored three in the first before single tallies in the second, third, and fourth.  LHS mustered three hits.  Erek Lira pitched four innings allowing six runs and five were earned.  Marco Alonso pitched two scoreless innings.

Great Bend is 8-1 and 2-0 in the WAC.  Liberal is 2-6 and 0-4 in the WAC.  The Redskins haven’t won in Great Bend since 2018.  The Skins play at Garden City Tuesday night at 6pm on 1270 and 92.3.
