On a damp and bone chilling day in Great Bend, common sense prevailed. The two teams were slated to play a double header. But after playing several innings in pouring rain and two lengthy lightning delays, LHS and Great Bend decided to play one game and make the other game up as part of a double header April 28 in Liberal. Great Bend pitching held Liberal’s bats in check in a 3-2 win in eight innings Friday night at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The game included rain, lightning, fog, mist, and wind.
The Redskins scored first. Evan Castillo was hit by a pitch. Eathan Hernandez reached on an error. Kye Morris sliced a two RBI double to right for the two run third inning. Then there was a delay of over an hour. Great Bend scored a run in the third and a run in the fourth. Great Bend used three sacrifice bunts in those two innings. The game went extra innings. The Panthers turned an error and a single into a run in the bottom of the eighth to walk off the Redskins. Kye Morris was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game. He used all 105 of his pitching going seven innings allowing two runs, five hits, four strikeouts, three walks, and two HBP. Morris was 1-2 at the plate with Liberal’s two RBI’s and one of their two hits.
Great Bend is 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the WAC. Liberal is 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the WAC. The Redskins play at Woodward Thursday night.
