On Saturday, April 25, Liberal Wrestling Club attended the WTC Gold Rush Freestyle and Greco tournament at Maize South High School. The team had five wrestlers compete in Greco and eight in Freestyle with one doubling up in age groups.
The morning started with Greco. AC Gomez placed first in his bracket. “AC is a great Greco wrestler. He has a lot of upper body strength and that is what Greco is all about,” Coach Krista Holcomb said. In Greco and Freestyle wrestling, wrestlers can receive 5 points on a grand amplitude throw. This is when a wrestler lifts their opponent in a wide arc with their feet passing directly overhead. Each wrestler who got a 5 point throw, received a special chip for this. “AC received 2 chips in one match on Saturday.
He has amazing control and the strength it takes,” Holcomb said.
Greco results are as follows:
AC Gomez, 1st, 1 pin and 1 tech fall
Ian Holcomb, 4th
Gustavo Sosa, 5th
Marco Jimenez, DNP
Bryan Portillo, DNP
At the conclusion of Greco, Freestyle began. Gomez wrestled in two age divisions for this style, causing him to have quite a few matches during the day.
“AC didn’t finish where he wanted for Freestyle, but we are very proud of everything he has accomplished this season. We are proud of our whole team and the time they have committed to this season – especially since most are trying it for the first time,” Holcomb said.
Freestyle results are as follows:
AC Gomez (16U), 2nd, 1 pin and 2 tech falls
AC Gomez (Juniors), 3rd, 1 tech fall
Ian Holcomb, 3rd
Alyvia Holcomb, 4th, 1 tech fall
Gustavo Sosa, DNP
Marco Jimenez, DNP
Bryan Portillo, DNP
Isaac Torres, DNP
Cesar Almazan, DNP
