Seward’s Blaine Chancy made sure there wouldn’t be extra innings. His towering home run to right center gave the Seward County Saints a 2-1 walk off win over the #23 Barton Cougars Saturday afternoon at Brent Gould Field. The win gave the Saints a series win over the Cougars. Barton won the second game 9-4. It was sunny with temperatures in the 50’s and light wind.
Game one was a pitcher’s dual. One swing of the bat by Blaine Chancy determined the outcome. Chancy hit a walk off home run to right center for the 2-1 walk off win. Cosme Vera pitched 4 and 2/3 strong innings allowing one run with four strikeouts and one walk. Cooper Turner went 2 and 1/3 scoreless for the win. Barton plated a run in the fifth. Seward tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Blaine Chancy singled. Jhett Huffman laid down a sac bunt. Jacob Urias singled through the left side to tie the game. Barton out-hit the Saints 7-4.
In game two, the Saints led 4-1 with two in the second and two in the third. But the Saints offense did not score for the rest of the game. Barton scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh. The Cougars added insurance in the ninth. The Saints out-hit the Cougars 11-10 but lost. Trajan Chavez pitched 2 and 2/3 allowing one run in relief. Cross Durham pitched a scoreless inning. Khale Leblanc was 3-4 with a double. Hayden Ramage and Jhett Huffman had two hits a piece.
Barton is 15-5 and 1-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Saints are 9-14 and 3-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Saints host Lamar Tuesday at 2pm at Brent Gould Field.
