Brock Kappelmann - July 8, 2024 6:45 am

The Liberal Bee Jay winning streak reached 13 games before ending in the 13th inning late Sunday night.  The visiting Fort Collins Foxes gained their first ever win over the Bee Jays 8-6 in 13 innings.  The game lasted 4 and 1/2 hours ending at about 11:30 Sunday night.

The Foxes scored first plating two in the third and one in the fourth against starter Jason Davis.  Elijah Batista led off the fifth with a double and scored the Taiga Sakoma laced an RBI double down the first base line.  The Foxes faltered in the sixth allowing three runs on two walks, two hit batters, and one error.  Joel Roberts led off the inning with a single.  An error and a walk loaded the bases and Tommy Molina walked with the bases loaded.  Elijah Batista was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Taiga Sakuma was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game.  That scored stood until the 10th when Fort Collins scored two runs.  Liberal turned around and tied the game in the bottom of the 10th.  Kyzer Harrington and Ben Merriman singled.  Elijah Batista hit a sac fly.  Taiga Sakuma doubled in front of the diving right fielder to tie the game.  Liberal loaded the bases in the 12th but couldn’t plate a run.  As the Bee Jays ran out of pitching, they used position players to pitch and allowed two in the 13th.

Both teams had 12 hits and Fort Collins had two hits and Liberal had one.  The B.J.’s led 15 runners on base.  Taiga Sakuma was Epic Touch Player of the Game going 3-4 with three RBI’s and two doubles.  Jason Davis started the game and worked four innings.  Brooks Kappelmann pitched three innings and did not allow an earned run.  Kappelmann struck out five and did not issue a walk.  Logan Wade went two scoreless innings.  Bobby Orr worked a scoreless 12th.

It was Liberal’s first loss since June 12 at Western Nebraska.  Fort Collins is 15-12 overall and 10-10 in the Rocky Mountain.  Liberal is 17-3 overall and 16-3 in the Rocky Mountain.  Hays split at Dodge City Sunday so Liberal is still in first at 16-3 and Hays is 15-4.  Liberal hosts Dodge City for a non league game Monday night at 7pm with the Dugout Show at 6:45 on 1270 and 92.3.  Sharp-McQueen PA is the buyout sponsor.
