With two outs in the top of the 7th and a 5-1 lead, the Seward County softball team needed one out to get off to a good start in the double header Wednesday afternoon against the Barton Cougars. Barton had other ideas. The Cougars scored six runs with two outs and held on to beat the Saints 7-5 in game one. Barton took game two 14-8. The games were played with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80’s.
In game one, SCCC scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth. Both teams scored single runs in the sixth as Seward led 5-1 with two outs in the seventh. The Cougars scored six runs with two outs in the seventh which included a 3 run home run to make it 5-4. BCC scored three more after the home run to take the 7-5 lead. Barton out-hit SCCC 14-7. Malaya Garcia hit a double in the loss.
In game two, Barton jumped on Seward for six in the first. SCCC answered with a six run third. Barton put up a three spot in the fourth to lead 9-6 before the Saints scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-8. Barton added five in the fifth for the 14-8 lead. Barton out-hit Seward 15-12. Jahlisa Klear was 3-4 with a double. Malaya Garcia was 2-4 with a home run. Taylor Harding and Mya Van Der May added two hits a piece.
Barton is 15-11 overall and 7-3 in the Jayhawk. Seward is 10-16 overall and 2-6 in the KJCCC. Seward plays at Colby Saturday at 1pm.
